A Call to Move Forward in Obedience

Scripture: Genesis 19:15–17, 24–26; Luke 9:62

15 And when the morning arose, then the angels hastened Lot, saying, Arise, take thy wife, and thy two daughters, which are here; lest thou be consumed in the iniquity of the city.

16 And while he lingered, the men laid hold upon his hand, and upon the hand of his wife, and upon the hand of his two daughters; the Lord being merciful unto him: and they brought him forth, and set him without the city.

17 And it came to pass, when they had brought them forth abroad, that he said, Escape for thy life; look not behind thee, neither stay thou in all the plain; escape to the mountain, lest thou be consumed…

24 Then the Lord rained upon Sodom and upon Gomorrah brimstone and fire from the Lord out of heaven;

25 And he overthrew those cities, and all the plain, and all the inhabitants of the cities, and that which grew upon the ground.

26 But his wife looked back from behind him, and she became a pillar of salt.

Introduction

But his wife looked back from behind him, and she became a pillar of salt.” — Genesis 19:26 (KJV)

In Genesis chapter 19, we read about two angels sent by God to the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah with a clear and urgent assignment—to destroy them because of the great wickedness within those cities.

As the angels arrive, they encounter Lot sitting at the gate of Sodom. While the full story is found in Genesis 19, several key lessons stood out to me as I studied this passage—lessons that are just as relevant for us today.

Three Key Lessons

  • God is calling you out
  • Don’t linger, tarry, or procrastinate
  • Don’t look back

1. God Is Calling You Out

Lot was a man who found favor in God’s sight. The angels were sent specifically to rescue him and his family from destruction. This reminds us that God will call His people out—even from environments that are not aligned with His will.

However, one thing is clear:
God did not give Lot a long time to decide.

When God calls us, we must be ready to respond. His call often challenges us to examine our hearts:

  • Do we love Him enough to forsake all?
  • Are we willing to obey without hesitation?

There was no time to delay—Lot was being called out.

2. Don’t Linger, Tarry, or Procrastinate

Genesis 19:16 tells us that Lot lingered.

To linger means:

  • To hesitate
  • To delay
  • To be reluctant
  • To be slow in leaving something behind

Even after receiving clear instructions, Lot hesitated.

Can you imagine what he was thinking?
What should I take? What should I leave? What about everything I’ve built?

Many of us are in that same place today.

God is calling us out—but we hesitate because:

  • We don’t know where we’re going
  • We want clarity before we move
  • We’re waiting for the full plan

But God is not asking for your full understanding—
He is asking for your obedience.

We often wait for Steps 1–5, when God is simply saying:

👉 “Take Step 1.”

Faith requires action. Faith without works is dead.

A Hard Truth About Others

In Genesis 19:14, Lot warned his sons-in-law—but they thought he was joking. They ignored the warning.

Here is the lesson:

Not everyone will go where God is calling you to go—even family.

As difficult as it may be, we must trust God not only with our lives, but with the lives of those we love. Do not delay your obedience waiting on others. There are souls connected to your assignment.

The Cost of Lingering

Because Lot delayed, the angels had to physically take him and his family by the hand and lead them out.

His hesitation almost cost him everything—
except for the mercy of God.

Today, we may not be physically carried out, but consider things like this:

  • Repeated trials
  • Closed doors
  • Ongoing struggles

Could it be that God is trying to get your attention?

Destruction was coming to Sodom.

The question is: Will you obey and be saved—or remain and be consumed?

3. Don’t Look Back

After God brought Lot and his family out safely, destruction came upon Sodom and Gomorrah. Fire and brimstone rained from heaven, and everything was destroyed.

But in that moment of escape—
Lot’s wife made a fatal decision.

She looked back. And instantly, she became a pillar of salt.

Why Was This So Serious?

This was not just a simple glance—it revealed the condition of her heart:

  • Disobedience — God gave a direct command not to look back
  • Attachment to the past — She still longed for what she left behind
  • Lack of trust — She was not fully confident in where God was leading her

Jesus Confirms This Principle

In Luke 9:62, Jesus says:

No man, having put his hand to the plough, and looking back, is fit for the kingdom of God.”

You cannot move forward while holding onto your past.

If you truly desire to walk in what God has called you to do,
you must release what He has called you out of.

Key Takeaways

God is calling you out.

· Do not linger.

· Do not procrastinate.

· Do not delay your obedience.

And most importantly—Don’t look back.

You cannot step into your future while holding onto your past.

God has greater things ahead for you—but you must be willing to let go of what’s behind.

Prophetic Prayer

Father, in the name of Jesus,
I thank You for choosing me and Your call upon my life.

Give me the courage to respond without hesitation.
Break every spirit of delay, fear, and procrastination.

Strengthen my heart to release everything You have called me to leave behind—
every attachment, every comfort, every distraction.

I declare that I will not look back.
I will move forward in obedience, faith, and confidence in You.

Father, order my steps, guide my path, and establish me in Your perfect will.

In Jesus’ name,
Amen.
