Scripture: I Kings 19:9-15

9 And he came thither unto a cave, and lodged there; and, behold, the word of the Lord came to him, and he said unto him, What doest thou here, Elijah?

10 And he said, I have been very jealous for the Lord God of hosts: for the children of Israel have forsaken thy covenant, thrown down thine altars, and slain thy prophets with the sword; and I, even I only, am left; and they seek my life, to take it away.

11 And he said, Go forth, and stand upon the mount before the Lord. And, behold, the Lord passed by, and a great and strong wind rent the mountains, and brake in pieces the rocks before the Lord; but the Lord was not in the wind: and after the wind an earthquake; but the Lord was not in the earthquake:

12 And after the earthquake a fire; but the Lord was not in the fire: and after the fire a still small voice.

13 And it was so, when Elijah heard it, that he wrapped his face in his mantle, and went out, and stood in the entering in of the cave. And, behold, there came a voice unto him, and said, What doest thou here, Elijah?

14 And he said, I have been very jealous for the Lord God of hosts: because the children of Israel have forsaken thy covenant, thrown down thine altars, and slain thy prophets with the sword; and I, even I only, am left; and they seek my life, to take it away.

15 And the Lord said unto him, Go, return on thy way to the wilderness of Damascus: and when thou comest, anoint Hazael to be king over Syria:

In these passages of scripture we read where God commissions Elijah. Elijah has fled into the wilderness from the threat of Jezebel. Her words were so intimidating that Elijah requested to die (verse 4). Notice this is after the power of God had anointed him to kill all the prophets of Baal, and the news of this great massacre had traveled back to the ears of Jezebel making her very angry.

Yet, God has another special assignment for Elijah. He is not done with him yet.

There are many of us today whom God has done many great and powerful things through us (just like Elijah), yet the great work that HE has begun in us is not complete. Perhaps, we are experiencing stumbling blocks, set-backs, hindrances, or the feelings of being overwhelmed, just like Elijah. Maybe we are struggling with hearing His voice as clearly as we used to. However, God has NOT changed His mind about calling us. We just need to tune our ears to a different frequency so we can hear His whispers.

God has something else to say, and something more for Elijah to do, but there were certain things Elijah needed to do first.

# 1. Change your posture.

Elijah ran into the wilderness, lay down and slept under a juniper tree. God sent an angel to minister to him, and the first words of the angel was; Arise and Eat! Sometimes the call and the assignment can be so heavy and so overwhelming and exhausting that all we want to do to lay down and sleep. But the ministering angel instructed Elijah to Arise! Not just once, but second time as well…for the journey is too great.

In order for us to be strengthened to complete the assignment we have been called to do; we must first change our posture. We can no longer lay down and sleep. We must Arise and Eat! Therefore, we must move from a laying down to stand. Stand strong in the power of His might! Stand strong and prepare to finish the race that is set before us. The second thing, Elijah had to do was:

#2 Change your position.

Elijah had gone down in the wilderness. In verse 11, he is instructed to stand upon the mount at attention before the Lord. Your new position, not only requires that you stand, but that you stand before the Lord. You are going to have get in the presence of the Almighty God. Nothing else will do! Many of us are have a pattern of how we used to hear the voice of the Lord. However, we are in a new season and the Lord has spoken: Behold, I will do a new thing…shall you not know it? Shall you not perceive it? God wants to speak to us in a new profound way and when we are busy looking for Him to follow the same patterns as in the past, we will miss him.

Elijah has to change not along his physical position from lying to standing, he had to change his spiritual position as well. His spiritual eyes, and ears had to see and hear differently. In verse 11, as the Lord passed by, Elijah looked for him in strong wind that broke the mountains into pieces, but the Lord was not there. After the strong wind, there was an earthquake, but the Lord was not in the earthquake either. After the earthquake, there was a fire, but God was not in the fire either. The noise was so violent that Elijah wrapped his face into his mantle and stood at the doorway of the cave. After all these events, a still, small voice came.

Still – calm, silence, gentle, quiet whisper.

God wanted to show Elijah another side of His character. His compassionate side, His merciful side, His all-knowing side. He wanted to let him know that He understood what he was feeling and He is and always will be right there with him. God wanted Elijah to learn to hear His voice even in the midst of chaos. Thirdly:

#3 Embrace your purpose.

There was no time for Elijah to curl up in a cave and feel sorry for himself. There was much work to be done. The same holds true for those whom God has called for a divine assignment and purpose. Yes, the call is great! Yes, the vision is huge! Yes, the journey is tough! Yes, there is opposition! However, the Lord is with us. He always is and always will be. Let us take lesson from Elijah. Change you posture! Change your position, and Embrace your Purpose!

Be confident of this very thing, that He which has begun a good work in you will perform it until the day of Jesus Christ (Philippians 1:6) KJV.
